March celebrates 18 years Cathedral has been in Hillcrest.

I can't even begin to explain how wonderful the last 18 years have been for me; and I couldn't have done any of it without my amazing customers. You have become my friends and family. I've watched children grow up, boys become men, girls become women and babies into teenagers; enjoying every minute of it.

But it's now time for me to move on to the next phase of my career and life. With that being said, Cathedral will soon be closing it's doors.

Hillcrest Mardi Gras is sponsored by the GSDBA Charitable Foundation and the Hillcrest Business Association. All proceeds from the street party benefit both organizations. Candle with Care

Candle fires account for 2.4% of all fires and result in 6% of total injuries from fires and 3% of all fatalities from fires.
The National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) reports candle fire incidents occur most often in the bedroom (45.2%), then in the family room (17.5%) and the bathroom (11.2%). The kitchen accounts for 6.3% of candle fire incidents. NFIRS also reports that the materials most often ignited by candles are cabinetry (9.4%); bedding (blankets, sheets, comforters, etc.) (7.7%); curtains and drapery (7.2%); mattresses & pillows (5.5%). Here are some Cathedral Tips on the proper way to burn a Candle:

Before lighting

1. Trim the wick to ¼ inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping or flaring.
2. Burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
3. Place the candleholder on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
4. Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
5. Avoid drafts, vents or air currents. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, and sooting.
6. Follow recommended burn times. This will prevent excessive heat build up.

While burning

1. Never touch or move a burning candle. Never move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquefied.
2. Don't burn a candle all the way down. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 10% of the wax is left.
3. Extinguish a candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for unwanted drafts before re-lighting.
4. Always keep the candle within your sight. If you are going to leave the room, be sure to first blow out all candles.

When extinguishing

1. Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It's the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering.
2. Never use water to extinguish a candle. Water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might break a glass container.
3. Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room. 4. Don't touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.

Greetings! Happy 2013!

We made it through 2012. Mayan Apocalypse and All...

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season filled with family, friends, and fun!
2012 was a roller coaster of a year filled with ups and downs, but we managed to make it through thanks to you our fabulous friends and loyal supporters. I call you friends because to me you are not only a customer, you are a loyal friend. We have shared stories and chatted about things on many occasions.

Thank You All for Supporting Cathedral for the last 18 years! These days owning a retail store is a challenge, but together we accomplished great things, and without your support 18 years of business wouldn't have been possible. We wish you all the best for 2013 and that you continue to reach for your goals. Happy New Year!

Scent Menu: Cinnamon!

Now that the festivities are kicking in we are in the mood for a spicy holiday scent that lingers thru out our home. Cinnamon is always been a good earthy and warm scent that we can count on for a delightful evening so here are our picks with this spicy scent:

• Fifth & Madison in Joix di Noel, with cinnamon, cranberry and mandarin notes this scents always put us on the mood for some Christmas carols!
• Fifth & Madison in Pumpkin Chai Latte, the creamy spiced chai with buttery pumpkin always get us.
• Volupsa in Clove Pomander, is the scent of red cloves crushed and blended with cinnamon, pear, bergamot and nutmeg.
• Voluspa in Mandarino Cannela,  is scented with Italian mandarin orange topped with vanilla cinnamon cream and finished with nutmeg and stem ginger.
• Aquiesse in Cinnamon Tabac, is a gift of golden cinnamon gently dusted over warm vanilla, with hints of sweet aged tobacco, summoning memories of a glow from a stone fireplace.
• K.Hall in Sweet Orange and Cassia, this delightful blend is natural for the holiday season, it has a pleasant year-round appeal with its orange and cinnamon blend.
• Hotel di Paris in Cinnamon Vetiver,  a lovely candle jar with the wording Hotel Palais Royal.  Scent is Cinnamon and Vetiver.

Wax Candleholders

We just love these easy and beautiful wax Candleholders DIY from Design*Sponge. Here is what you need for materials as well as a step by step guide. For a more detail guide with pictures click here!

Materials

• Electronic tea lights (only use electronic lights for this project, as actual candles could cause the wax paper to burn)
• Wax paper
• Although it’s not necessary, you can use masking tape to keep the holder together once it’s completed.

Directions
1. Tear a strip of wax paper from a roll. It should be about a foot long. You can vary the length depending how tall you want your candle holder to be.
2. Next, bring up the folded section of paper to about half an inch below where you left the bottom of the sheet in the previous step.
3. Repeat the previous step with the next fold.
4. With your fold layers facing outward, create a cylinder by bringing each side of the wax paper together and nesting one end within the folds.
5. Pop an electronic tea light in there, and you’re ready to go!

Fall is in the air. Literally! The store is full of NEW beautiful fragrances but the lovely scent of pine is still one our favorites. This scents screams Christmas, Family and Joy. Here are our favorite brands with the pine scent:

•  Thymes in Frasier Fir, the aromatic snap of crisp Siberian fir needles, heartening cedarwood and relaxing sandalwood forms a refreshing bed of crisp, just-cut forest fragrance. Undertones of rich floral musk deepen and soften the resinous woody notes, for a scent that’s mountain fresh, yet cozy and comforting.
• Patch NYC in Stag, siberian fir, cilantro, citrus and a touch of raspberry make this one of our most popular scents. Fresh as a brisk morning walk in the woods and cozy as an evening by a roaring fire this candle is perfect anytime.
